THE ARTISTS

The projects of the New Patrons are unique. Each patrons group is different from all the others. That's why it's important to find the one artist who fits a commission, its people and its place. This is one of the tasks of the mediators. With their background and expertise in the cultural sector, they research and suggest people whose artistic language, form, or themes could be suitable for the issue in question. Sometimes artists also approach a mediator because they are interested in citizen-commissioned art. In the end, the decision to commission an artist always lies with the patrons group.

For many artists, getting involved in unfamiliar situations and places is a welcome challenge. In doing so, they do not simply carry out the commissions. They are invited as active partners to understand the background from which their commission arises. They interpret it, dig into it, research it, and develop ideas for a new charitable work. They often make unexpected suggestions, look at the citizens' wishes from a hitherto unknown angle. Little by little, they develop the idea into a work that responds to the needs of the clients. In the process, all participants share responsibility for the creation process –because in the end, the commissioners decide whether an artistic idea is so convincing that it should be implemented.

In this way, new sculptures and installations, performances, and interventions, spaces, buildings or parks are created that meet local needs but can also reach far into the public sphere. The artists transform the commissions into widely recognized new public cultural goods.
